Weekly Update (22/11/09) – 911 Xbox, Cataclysm, Overpaid Stars, Megan Fox returns, etc.
Have you ever got something of value taken away by your parents? Did you call the cops about it? Well, a 15-year-old called 911 when his parents took his Xbox away to check if it was legal for them to do so. And yes, unfortunately it is in fact legal for your parents to take something away from you. Not quite as bad as the story where a teenager murdered his parents over Halo.
Merciless Gladiator Athene has announced the sequel to his movie Wrath of the 1337 King, unsurprisingly titled Cataclysm. Athene tells us that the new movie will be so popular that pretty soon games will be named after it. Perhaps Blizzard will finally listen to Athene when he gives advice on WoW and name the next expansion after it. Oh wait.
Forbes has debuted a list of Hollywood’s Most Overpaid stars. Funny man Will Ferrell takes the top spot as the most overpaid star and I completely agree. I don’t know about you but I strongly dislike the old man. Talladega Nights was alright but apart from that I just don’t find him to be even remotely funny. Other actors on the list include Eddie Murphy, who hasn’t made any good films lately apart from Shrek, and Mission Impossible hero Tom Cruise.
Despite the rather amusing drama between Megan Fox and Transformers director Michael Bay that’s been going on, Bay himself has confirmed that Megan will be back in Transformers 3 and will not be killed off in the first 15 minutes as recent rumours have stated. It seems that the king of big screen explosions doesn’t really care about the young star’s outspoken comments. He even goes as far as to say that he “loves her”.
And for some more movie news, in light of the recent $91mil success of Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans, there will in fact be a fourth installment of the series. The sequel is set to follow the recent trend in movies and will be shot in digital 3D. I don’t get the 3D hype, but to be fair I haven’t recently watched any 3D movies. As for this new movie, I haven’t really seen any of the Underworld movies so I don’t know if this is a good or bad idea. Though looking at previous trends, extending a franchise beyond a trilogy doesn’t always guarantee success. Kate Beckinsale doesn’t look like she’s going to return for the fourth movie either. Nonetheless, it didn’t seem to affect the success of the third movie, but replacement Rhona Mitra isn’t attached to the sequel either.
The latest installment of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2, has broken sales records. Activision has reportedly earned over $550 million worldwide with over 9 million copies of the game sold within the first week of release. I’ve only played the first five minutes of it and those five minutes were pretty amazing. I just need to find the time to sit down for about six hours straight to finish it.
I’m pretty sure the local cinemas will be filled with squealing, prepubescent teenage girls (and maybe boys too) this weekend due to the slightly delayed release of New Moon. The sequel to Twilight has managed to defeat the legend that is The Dark Knight in terms of the one day gross record. New Moon managed to steal $72.7 million on its first day as opposed to The Dark Knight’s $67.2 million. I’ll try being professional here but everyone knows The Dark Knight is and always will be infinitely better than New Moon. This week Ninja Assassin will be released alongside it here in Asia, and I have friends arguing about which movie we should watch this weekend. If any of you are reading this, a trusty female source in Australia has confirmed that the movie is bad. She claims that it is, and I quote “IT WAS SO BAD. LIKE SO BAD”.
Complaint letters are often hilarious, but this one directed at Virgin Airlines takes the cake for being one of the most hilarious letter I’ve ever read. Major bonus points for having related imagery. And in other humourous news, a 10 year-old girl was tasered by a police officer because her mother gave the officer permission to do so if required. Perhaps the girl was denied to attend a screening of New Moon and threw a tantrum? I’m sure that isn’t too far-fetched.
That’s about it for this week. I leave you with Brand New’s single from their latest album, Daisy.
