Review: Zombieland

After another delayed Southeast Asian release, I finally got the chance to see Zombieland. Just a bit of a story before the review: I originally intended to watch this around 3pm, but the cinema’s website was (still) overloaded so I was not able to book tickets the day before. So after telling a friend who arrived first to queue for about 20 minutes only to find out there were only front row seats left, we decided to just watch it another day.

We went on to have lunch at TGI Friday’s, but were halted by a 30 minute waiting list. Not really a problem. To pass the time, we went to an MPH Bookstore. I went to the music section to check for the new 30 Seconds To Mars album, when I noticed there was a ‘Testing Station’ with a computer and no one there. I looked around and fortunately for me, the entire section was at the back of the store and there were no customers around. I hopped on the computer and proceeded to book Zombieland tickets at another local cinema nearby. It didn’t help that the internet connection was extremely slow and the clerk manning the station could return at any time, but I swiftly managed to book a 4pm showing.

Anyway, on to the review. Many see Zombieland as the American take of Shaun of the Dead. Zombieland is almost as good as Shaun of the Dead, but it seems to be missing something. Don’t get me wrong though, Zombieland is awesome. It’s almost like an adaptation of Left 4 Dead, but with much laughs. While the genre for this movie is horror comedy, it’s a lot more comedy than horror. The humour in Zombieland is really dead-on (pun intended) solid. It doesn’t overdo things and the entire movie is filled with laughs from start to finish. A few times during the movie, the laughter of one or two members of the audience was so loud (and high pitched) it was annoying.

The cast seemed to be the perfect choice for each character and they are as brilliant as they are funny. Being an R-rated zombie movie, expect some zombie violence. Nothing too over the top, but you really can’t have a zombie movie without the violence. The only thing I dislike about Zombieland is its length. At 88 minutes, it’s not that long of a movie. I wanted it to go on further because it was just hilarious.

Zombieland is a brilliant horror comedy and definitely one of the funniest films of the year. If you enjoyed Shaun of the Dead you will most certainly enjoy this. I don’t think there are a lot of zombie comedies as opposed to non-comedies, so if you happen to dislike zombie movies in general, this one might surprise you. Zombieland’s success has already spawned a sequel, set for release in 2011.
