Review: Sherlock Holmes

It was the night before Christmas. And all throughout the cinemas. Everyone was queuing. Even the old people.

Ok enough of that. Sherlock Holmes was this week’s new release. The last Guy Ritchie film I saw was RockNRolla starring Gerard Butler, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Strong, etc. and it was definitely a very entertaining movie. Because of that, I expected Sherlock Holmes to be just as good if not better. Being one of, if not the last major release of the year, Sherlock HolmesĀ  ends the cinematic year of 2009 with much success.

I don’t know much about Sherlock Holmes except that it was created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle so I’m not sure how much the movie stays true to the novels, but this adaptation seems to work pretty well. The plot centers around our legendary detective trying to stop a notorious villain who’s plans threaten the whole of England. It’s obviously mystery-driven and while it doesn’t quite bring anything new to the table, the ending comes off as rather unexpected and leaves the door for a sequel wide open.

Robert Downey Jr’s performance as Mr. Holmes is quite impressive. I disagree with those who claim he was the wrong choice to play Holmes because he seems to fit the character pretty well. Jude Law’s Watson doesn’t fall far behind either and Mark Strong makes a good villain. There are a number of good laughs in the script and overall, Sherlock Holmes is probably the last good movie you can catch this year and it’s worth it. This will probably be my last review for the year so Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to everyone reading.
