Review: Ninja Assassin

This week I had the option of checking out one of two new releases – New Moon or Ninja Assassin. Quite an obvious choice no? If you had the misfortune of having to sit through New Moon against your will, theater hopping to a showing of Ninja Assassin would’ve been a good idea, because Ninja Assassin delivers. It’s everything New Moon isn’t – bloody, violent and awesome. When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought “woah that looks brutally cool”, and that’s exactly what Ninja Assassin is – brutal and cool.

Ninja Assassin tells the story of a ninja named Raizo, played by Korean pop star turned actor Rain, who turns against the clan that raised him because he would not accept their ways, and is betrayed and nearly killed for doing so. The plot is nothing special and mediocre at best, but that’s not the focus of the movie. Be prepared for a lot of blood and limbs flying. And they start flying from the first 5-10 minutes of the movie. It’s actually rather over the top that at some points it’s funny how limbs seem to be made of tofu and how the CGI blood looks like ketchup fountains, but none of that really matters.

What makes Ninja Assassin so enjoyable are the amazingly choreographed action scenes. This is easily one of the best action movies of the year. If you ask me, this movie is about one raging ninja seeking revenge while mercilessly cutting, stabbing, slicing and dicing anyone that stands in his way. I’ve been led to believe Rain did most if not all of his stunts himself and he does a very good job.

Definitely not an award-winning movie, but a very solid action flick. The keyword here if you haven’t caught it yet is action. I’ve attached the trailer below. If you’ve seen as many movies as I have, you should be able to tell this is nothing more than mindless escapism. Think Rambo, but with ninjas. See it for the action, not for anything else. I realise some people may see it for Rain, but just be sure you don’t mind over nine thousand gallons of blood and ninjas decapitating each other with samurais swords and blades on chains.
