Avatar breaks $1.6 billion: Now 2nd Highest Grossing Movie of All Time
James Cameron’s Avatar has officially gone past the $1 billion mark. At this point in writing, Box Office Mojo puts Avatar as the 4th highest grossing movie of all time with $1,018,811,000, beating out Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and coming relatively close to third place contender Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. This achievement also makes James Cameron the only director with two ‘$billion films’. There’s still a considerable amount to cover before he can break his own record set by Titanic.
Will Avatar take the throne? We’ll just have to wait and see
Update (18/01/10): At this point in writing, Avatar is the 2nd highest grossing movie of all time with $1.6 billion and only $240 million away from catching up to Titanic. I walked past the local cinemas last week and people are still queuing up for Avatar and tickets are still selling out. I’m pretty sure Avatar will be able to take the throne from Titanic in the next few weeks. (thx Dana)
